Men’s Issues
Present day culture and stigma can make it more challenging for men to receive the support they need for mental health stressors. Many men have had the experience of having their emotions denied or mocked, leading to messages that their only job is to be an unwavering, strong provider (not allowed to feel, not allowed to show hurt). Many men have grown up without any modeling or teaching of how to appropriately deal with emotions – or their only modeling for male emotion was anger as a tool for power.
Men have a deep desire for true connection, but often did not receive the appropriate modeling or messaging around intimacy and vulnerability. Men frequently feel an inner sense of inadequacy and thus feel pressured to over-perform or compare themselves to others in terms of wealth, manliness, or sexual desirability, leading to profound sadness and loss of meaning/purpose. Therapy can help.
Some common men’s issues in therapy are:
Intimacy and vulnerability issues
Sexual issues (non medical)
Difficulty expressing or pushing away of emotions
Self-esteem related to living up to cultural expectations
Anger and Irritability
Overwhelm
Toxic Masculinity
