Religious Trauma
“When I discover who I am, I’ll be free.” - Ralph Ellison
Religious trauma occurs when psychological, physical, or emotional distress arises due to experiences, beliefs, or practices that occurred in the context of a religion. The distress might be due to oppression, discrimination, strict beliefs, or experiences that invoked judgment; shame; or guilt. This distress can lead to low self esteem, depression, anxiety, and PTSD.
Therapy can be a supportive and safe place to explore religious trauma, resolve shame, and discover your true identity. The therapeutic relationship will offer a place to build trust, boundaries, and foster healthier interpersonal relationships. You and your therapist will work together to understand your experiences, history, and how that impacts you today. EMDR, IFS parts work, and attachment based therapy can help you to reprocess religious trauma, understand who you are, and help build healthy relationships.
